Honored to Recognize K9 "Bear" of the Austin Police Department

One of the awesome things I get to do as a member of the Greater Austin Crime Commission is to recognize the services of the Austin Police Department K9’s when they retire. The Crime Commission pays for the medical bills of the retired K9’s. At the ceremony today, there were approximately 40 APD police officers, family members and media in attendance. Bear even got his own cake!

New E-Book from Lawfare on the Blowback to General Soleimani's Killing

Pleased to be included in a new e-book from our friends at Lawfare/Brookings on the blowback from the killing of Iranian General Soleimani. The chapter is “Protecting Diplomats Following Soleimani’s Death” and focuses on the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS.) How do you protect diplomats during times of a heightened threat? DSS has learned some hard lessons over the years, but nobody does it better.

Fred Burton Interviewed by KNOE on Iranian General Soleimani's Killing

We’ve been swamped with interviews about the blow-back to America, due to Iranian General Soleimani’s killing. Here is one that I did with KNOE.

Security, information technology experts weigh in on possible Iranian cyber attacks

Iran's missile attacks may be over, but security experts say it's possible the country could move forward with cyber warfare. Iran launched over a dozen missiles at U.S. housed Air Force bases in Iraq Wednesday. No casualties were reported. It's an attack the former State Department special agent Fred Burton said was intentional.

Fred Burton on Protecting American Diplomats in the Wake of the Killing of Iranian General Soleimani

Lawfare, part of the Brookings Institute, asked for a few thoughts on how the Diplomatic Security Service (DSS) reacts to the increased threat to American diplomats and embassies, in the wake of the killing of Iranian General Soleimani in a targeted drone strike. From Beirut to Benghazi, the DSS has learned some very hard lessons over the years, but nobody does a better job with less.

Protecting Diplomats Following Soleimani's Death

The recent siege at the U.S. Embassy in Baghdad and subsequent threats of retaliation from Iran and its proxies following the Jan. 3 U.S. military operation that killed commander of Iran's Quds Force Qassem Soleimani are vivid reminders that the world is often a dangerous place for American diplomats.

Fred Burton on Iranian General Soleimani's Killing

I’ve done several media interviews over the past 24-hours about the ramifications of the U.S. killing of Iranian General Soleimani in a targeted drone strike. For any student of terror, Iran’s next move will be interesting to see unfold. In the 1980’s and 1990’s, we were not very good at being able to predict where or when Iran would strike — which led to disaster. I hope we are better today. Here is one of my interviews (WWNY.)

Counter terrorism expert: Soleimani's death could influence Fort Drum's future

AUSTIN, TX (WWNY) - The United States takes out a top Iranian military commander in an airstrike in Iraq and Iran vows harsh revenge. With conflict in the Middle East comes uncertainty about what could be next for the 10th Mountain Division at Fort Drum.

Fred Burton Makes The List of Bisnow “Best Quotes of 2019”

“If I wanted to figure out why or what you're working on … I don't have to hack into your system. I just have to have someone work next to you who knows what you're doing. It is just that simple sometimes. It is basic agent 101.” — Stratfor Chief Security Officer Fred Burton on the security risks of coworking, to Atlanta reporter Jarred Schenke.
